The End of the Road is a 2¼ acre (9145m2) property in a tranquil fairytale setting on the coast of West Cork, Ireland. This Insulated Concrete Form 5 bedroom, 4 full and 2 half bath, open plan, spacious private residence offers the best of country living while still being in close proximity to the popular cosmopolitan town of Schull and its harbour. A deeded right of way goes to a private beach and slipway.
The approximately 3,600 sq.ft. (~335m2) house, orientated to the southwest, is nestled in a natural landscape abundant with native flora and fauna and magnificent views guaranteed to relax even the most frantic city dweller. A pond below the house is fed by 4 springs and is home to the geothermal loop system. While some gardens have been developed adjacent to the house, there is plenty of scope for further creativity above and below the house.
Though the house is fully functional it is also ripe for personalization with finishing touches. Without the current furnishings and fittings, The End of the Road is a blank slate that can accommodate your vision of the perfect home. Surrounded by a stunning and dramatic landscape this house offers a wide range of options, comfort and privacy to families, sailors, artists, moguls, etc.
The End of the Road is constructed with the IntegraSpec “User Friendly ICF” system. The system affords the owner tremendous energy efficiency, sound protection, air and moisture barriers and safety from high winds. The ground floor ceiling beams are steel with a cement floor atop providing excellent soundproofing. The walls are filled with 6 inches [15cm] of concrete except for the north wall which has 8 inches [20cm] of concrete. The roof is also ICF with 4 inches [10cm] of concrete between the insulation layers.
The ground floor throughout the house has 9 foot ceilings and geothermal (water to water closed loop) in-floor heating. There are two (back + front of house) heat recovery/air exchanger units fitted with germicidal UV lights for clean sweet air. Two gas instant hot water heaters provide an endless supply for all your requirements. The windows are double pane low UV and hurricane rated. All opening windows in the house have removable screens to let the sea air in and keep the bugs out.
A discreet marble tiled half bath makes the living room space perfect for entertaining. Zoned lighting allows for easy change of ambience. The living room area is wired for speakers and there is a customizable space under the stairs designated for electronics.
The master suite (upstairs front of the house) has dormer windows and consists of 2 large bedrooms, spacious full bath with skylight, walk in shower, jacuzzi bath and double above counter marble sinks. There is a separate walk in closet, office/TV area and under eave built in shelves and hanging space in the larger of the 2 bedrooms. The bathroom is done in various stone tiles and there are 14 foot cathedral ceilings throughout with zoned lighting.
The annex ground floor bedrooms have built in closets and ensuite marble-tiled bathrooms with walk in showers. Upstairs, the bedroom suite has sleep and study areas separated by a full bath all under a cathedral ceiling with 3 skylights. The walk in attic (above the library) is accessible from this suite. The library, composed of custom bookcases which can be rearranged or moved, has an ensuite half bath plus a separate entrance from the garden.
